Last Updated: 6 February 2019

New Zealand Flag Referendums Amendment Bill 2015

23 September 2015 Attorney-General

New Zealand Flag Referendums Amendment Bill 2015 (Members Bill) Our Ref: ATT395/239

  1. The Ministry of Justice asked us to examine this Private Members Bill for its consistency with the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, because the Ministry has provided the Government with policy advice on the principal Act.
  2. The Bill proposes an amendment to the principal Act by enabling the addition of a further flag design to the voting paper on the first referendum alongside the four options currently set out in the New Zealand Flag Referendums (First Flag Referendum) Order 2015.
  3. The Bill raises no inconsistency with any of the rights guaranteed by the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990.
  4. This advice has been peer reviewed by Daniel Perkins, Crown Counsel.

Austin Powell

Senior Crown Counsel
