Last Updated: 10 October 2020

LEGAL ADVICE
LPA 01 01 24
Hon David Parker, Attorney-General
Consistency with the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990: Lawyers and
Conveyancers (Employed Lawyers Providing Free Legal Services)
Amendment
Bill
- We
have considered whether the Lawyers and Conveyancers (Employed Lawyers Providing
Free Legal Services) Amendment Bill (‘the
Bill’), a Member’s
Bill in the name of Chris Bishop MP, is consistent with the rights and freedoms
affirmed in the New
Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 (‘the Bill of Rights
Act’).
- The
Bill amends the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 (‘the Act’) to
allow employed lawyers to do free legal work outside of their employment,
provided their employers agree
and it is in accordance with any practice rules
made under the Act by the New Zealand Law Society.
- We
have concluded that the Bill appears to be consistent with the rights and
freedoms affirmed in the Bill of Rights Act.
