Proclamation Amending Charter of 1840 1842 [1842] NZConLRes 2 (1 November 1842)

PROCLAMATION

ANNOUNCING THE ISSUE OF LETTERS PATENT OF THE 4TH APRIL 1842, REVOKING SO MUCH OF THE CHARTER OF 1840 AS DESCRIBES THE LIMITS OF THE COLONY, AND DECLARING OTHERS.

WHEREAS, by Royal Charter bearing date the 16th day of November, 1840, Her Majesty Queen Victoria, did erect the Islands of New Zealand, and all other Islands adjacent thereto within certain limits in the said Charter described, into a separate Colony, and did declare Her Royal pleasure to be that the said Islands should thereafter be known and designated as the Colony of New Zealand. And whereas Her Majesty did reserve to herself, Her Heirs, and Successors, full power and authority to revoke, alter, or amend the said Charter, as to her or them should seem meet.

And Whereas Her Majesty has been pleased to amend and enlarge the boundaries of the Colony of New Zealand.

Now, therefore, I, the Officer Administering the Government of the said Colony, do hereby proclaim and declare that by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, bearing date the 4th day of April, 1842, Her Majesty did revoke so much of the said Charter as describes the limits of the said Colony, and did declare that the said Colony should include and comprise all those territories, islands, and countries lying between Thirty-three degrees of South latitude, and Fifty-three degrees of South latitude; and between One hundred and Sixty-two degrees of East longitude, reckoning from the meridian of Greenwich, and One hundred and Seventy-three degrees of West longitude, reckoning from the same meridian.

Given under my Hand and Seal at Auckland, this First day of November, in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and Forty two.
